The woods residence represents an introduction of a native Californian architectural legacy through Finn Kappe and the owner/ structural engineer to the tahoe area. At the request of the owner, a successful indoor / outdoor approach to living was integrated into the heart of the Sierra Nevada. The suspended living area spans, by means of expressed steel beams, from the kitchen tower at the east to the vertical circulation / service tower at the west. The adaptation of dual glazing creatively "mitered" at three corners facilitates a 270-degree view. While neighboring residences lose the lower levels, and typically the living area to deep build-ups of snow in the dead of winter, the woods residence floats above a deep surrounding blanket of snow.
Simple, elegant details exhibit and allow the clear method of construction expression. Bedroom volumes at the west, circulation / service tower in the middle, and living area to the east, assimilate into the indigenous landscape with minimal disturbance.
